It was a good draft for the Detroit Pistons on Thursday night. They were able to draft Greg Monroe out of Georgetown, a solid Center with some rare passing skills, and Terrico White out of Mississippi, a combo guard. They were able to make these picks without giving up some players, as was rumored earlier this week. Overall they were able to improve their roster without any subtraction. Detroit managed to finish their season on a high note, beating one of the few teams worse than the Pistons. Austin Daye started again and had 12 points, while DaJuan Summers played 26 minutes off the bench and scored 12 points as well. It’s encouraging to see them get some good playing time and contribue, about the only encouraging thing from this poor season.
So what’s next? First there’s the turnover. There isn’t going to be a large turnover this offseason. Currently only Kwame Brown, Will Bynum, and Ben Wallace are the only players not under contract. Rodney Stuckey has a team option, and Chris Wilcox has a player option. No word on either player exercising their option. It would make sense that they resign, but after the last campaign nothing is guaranteed. This leaves the Pistons with a $55,712,996 payroll for the 2010-2011 campaign. The projected salary cap, available in July, will be around $56.1 million. For some perspective, the Lakers have the highest payroll at $91 million, followed by the Mavericks at $87 million, and the Celtics at $85 million. Detroit ranks 26th overall with a $61 million payroll this season.
There are certain situations that allow teams to sign their players, like the Bird rule. This isn’t a route the Pistons will be taking. Instead, they’ll be looking to aquire talent through trades. Trades let you exchange contracts up to 120%, meaning that the payroll can go up if a trade is made. This should be how the Pistons manage to aquire talent. The draft will also be vital, but trading is also pretty important this off season. As the playoffs and the offseason that follows progress, we’ll get to see more players who will be available for Detroit.
The only thing to do now is sit back, and wait for the draft on June 24. There is a lot of big men to choose from in this upcoming draft, so selecting the best fit will be critical. A good selection can help the Pistons bounce back next season and keep them from the lottery in the future. Plus with the aging talent on the team, the draft needs to be at their highest priority. Some preliminary names would be DeMarcus cousins from Kentucky, Greg monroe of Georgetown, Ed Davis out of UNC, and Cole Aldrich out of Kansas.
Detroit will need to be draft focused for now. Later they can worry about trades and free agents.
The Pistons have had a roller coaster season. It may look like the team is just too bland to win but there’s other factors that have also contributed to their current predicament. The biggest question on Pistons fans minds right now is why are you picking now to start winning games, and is the boost in pride worth it? Read the rest of this entry >>
The struggling Pistons take their nearly cancelled show on the road to Miami to take on the Heat. Miami has currently won 5 in a row and 8 of the last 10, while the Pistons have dropped 8 in a row and are 1-9 in the last 10. Miami is currently in the 6th playoff spot in the East, and 1.5 games behind Milwaukee for the 5th seed. With that in mind, it’s expected that the Heat will be looking to blow out the Pistons to make up ground in the playoff race. With Milwaukee taking on the Cavaliers tonight, Miami has a window of opportunity and they know it. Read the rest of this entry >>
